Pahiatua Camp, boys at the grotto‘Little Poland’ in Pahiatua   Exhibition

733 children and 102 adults came  to the Polish children’s Camp in New Zealand. New Zealanders  gave an extraordinary  welcome to  these ‘First  Refugees’ as  they were transported  by train on 1st November 1944 from Wellington to Pahiatua. A place they named  ‘Little Poland’.This was to become their first home in New Zealand.This year marks the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the ‘Children of Pahiatua’.
